Spiritual Discernment: How to Know What's True

With all the information bombarding you from the media, from governments, from corporation-sponsored scientific research, from officially approved this or that, from countless teachers, guides, and gurus, and now from AI itself, how do you know what’s true?

Who should you believe? And who should you trust to guide you on the most important matters, when the world gets more confusing and the truth gets more elusive every day?

In this episode, I’m not going to ask you to believe what I say. I’m going to do exactly the opposite. I’m going to teach you how to decide for yourself whether something is true or right for you.

Wow! What a concept! It’s called discernment and your life depends on it.

DISCERNMENT

My friend, it’s been too long. For too long we have learned to follow, to obey, to believe what various other “higher” authorities tell us, but, if you’re drawn to my work at all it’s because you know you are more than you’ve been told.

You know you are intimately connected with Source consciousness, you have a direct connection to the infinite knowledge and wisdom in this universe and beyond, and you are increasingly realizing just how magnificent, wise and divinely guided you truly are.

You’re realizing that it’s time to reclaim your spiritual and mental sovereignty. It’s all part of rewilding your soul, of going back to your true nature. Part of it is remembering how to discern the truth for yourself.

Now, this does not mean you’re meant to be 100% alone and independent and supporting yourself and not relying on anyone else. If our true nature is connection, and everything in the universe is divinely conspiring to help you, then not only are we all experts on our own lives and experiences, but our unique expertise can complement that of others, so that each of us has something valuable to share.

So it’s crucially important to receive valuable advice from other people – we can’t all be expert plumbers and financial analysts and spiritual advisers. We just have to know how to discern whether information is true, or right for us, and especially whether the source of the information deserves our trust.

Now, discernment is incredibly useful in all areas of life, and what I’ll teach you here applies to all kinds of information – but I’m going to address it today especially in the context of spiritual truth, basically because I’ve been shocked to learn from my own students and community members just how many disappointing experiences they’ve had with other teachers and guides out there.

I’m surprised, but not surprised at the same time, because I know how the world works. Firstly, let’s go into the main reasons why someone might be giving you information that is false or harmful.

1. They may not know any better. Maybe they are well-intentioned, but just don’t have the full story. Maybe they heard it from someone else and didn’t use their discernment like I’ll teach you in a minute.

2. They could have an ulterior motive. They might want to influence your thoughts and beliefs in order to control your behavior in a certain way, and that could go in all sort of directions, including keeping you dependent on them. (On that note, of course it’s not wrong to pay for spiritual advice, just as we pay for financial advice, medical advice, and relationship advice. In our current economy, we all work to make ends meet. That’s not wrong. Spiritual advice can create lasting happiness sometimes as good as or better than those other services; it’s extremely valuable. But the provider must have a pure intent to help you, not manipulate you.)

3. Their information might be true, but not helpful for you at this moment in time. Perhaps it’s only a partial truth and you’re at a more advanced stage, or you might not be ready for that information and could end up overwhelmed in some way.

So it really all comes down to your discernment. This is not to judge anyone. As I just mentioned, most people have good intentions but their information still might not be right for you at this time. So I’ll give you two main ways you can practice discerning whether something is true or helpful.

TRUTH & LIGHT

The first way is to feel the truth in your body. This is your main way of recognizing truth. When you’ve got nothing left to hold on to, and nothing and no one you can trust, you’ve always got your body. Your body loves you and is always serving you the very best that it can.

It’s often overlooked – but very reliable especially after you’ve practiced this technique a few times. Basically, you don’t have one brain, you have three. And so after you’ve consulted your brain and got it to do its calculations and its list of pros and cons, you thank your brain and then move on to your heart.

Your heart is your direct connection to your unique stream of source consciousness all the way from the zero-point field. It’s your direct line to your soul-level wisdom. And your heart remembers. It’s got some of the oldest cells in your body and it remembers everything you’ve learned throughout your life. Ask your heart if something is true. See how it responds. You’ll usually be able to feel a difference when something is a NO vs. when something is a YES.

When you’re just starting out, calibrate your heart’s responses so you can distinguish the NOs from the YESes. Ask your heart questions you already know the answer to, like “Do I love my cat?” and you’ll usually feel a lighter, more expansive feeling when it’s a YES and a more contracted feeling when it’s a NO.

I remember once I was in the underground train in the UK and I wasn’t sure if I was going in the right direction to the airport. The maps were confusing and there weren’t many connections. So I asked my heart if I was going in the right direction, and my heart just exploded with kind of a hot and panicky feeling; it felt like my chest was on fire. My heart was basically screaming NO. So I listened, and got off at the next stop and found out that my heart was right – I was very far away from the airport and had to take a really long detour to finally get there.

Your NOs and YESes will probably be more subtle, but still perceptible. It just takes some practice and then with time, the more often you ask the stronger the responses will become.

So then you can ask your gut for its perspective. You see, we’re basically working with the dantiens. You’ve got your brain in the upper dantien, the heart in the middle dantien, and the gut in the lower dantien. You gut area’s got as many neurons as a cat’s brain, and your cat is very opiniated about what it likes and doesn’t like. You’ve also got trillions of symbiotic bacteria in your gut that want you to thrive and be healthy.

So, ask your gut the same question and see what you feel. Calibrate with questions you already know the answer to: “Gut, do I like to eat rocks?” and feel what the NO feels like. And then ask it if something is true or right for you. If it doesn’t help you survive and thrive, it may tell you NO.

And then take all of your responses from all three of your minds and then decide. This can also help you make decisions for your life.

And then the 2nd way is specifically related to the person telling you the information. Especially if it’s a spiritual advisor, look at their light.

You just close your eyes and picture them with their auric field around them. And then put yourself next to them in your mind’s eye, with your aura, and compare the two. Does this teacher or guru have more light around them than you do? Fantastic, then what they have to say may be in your best interest. Do they have less light than you? Hmm, maybe be cautious.

Because all of us have our egos still - I know I do - and our egoic structure filters our soul’s light as it comes through us. So if someone has a lot of manipulation or other density in their field, that will dampen their light. Anyone who’s in a body has some form of ego because ego is what keeps us alive. But especially as spiritual advisors and teachers, we are constantly purifying and clarifying our being so that our soul’s light comes through undistorted.

Alright, rewilding soul, you now have the tools to discern the truth. You and your divine Source together are the ultimate authority on what’s appropriate for you. Don’t believe me or anyone else for that matter, just because we say something. Discern for yourself whether someone or something is true and right for you. That is what we need more of in this world.
